UEFA successfully implements Blockchain

UEFA recently announced that they used Blockchain to distribute the electronic tickets for the Super Cup final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Blockchain is the distributed ledger technology underlying cryptocurrencies. However, experts say it Blockchain is useful in almost any industry. That is because this technology allows individuals to communicate and trade without the need for an intermediary.

According to UEFA organizers, they used Blockchain to optimize the sale of tickets. UEFA implemented this system at the Super Cup final between Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid in the Estonian capital, Tallinn. Football fans entered the stadium by checking their tickets at Bluetooth devices around the stadium.

UEFA sees the advantages in using Blockchain

The benefits of issuing electronic tickets using Blockchain are numerous. Safer and faster transfer of tickets is one of the most important advantages of the Blockchain system. This process prevents attempts to get more tickets with the intention of selling them for profit on the black market. The system is also designed to provide a secure ticket distribution, preventing theft or unauthorized duplication of tickets.

Last but not least, issuing electronic tickets is more convenient for fans. They can get their tickets quickly without worrying about losing them or forgetting them at home. Many sports organizations believe that selling mobile tickets is a more efficient and secure way to ensure access to stadiums. Blockchain is the best way to ensure this.

Organizers first used this system to distribute 50% of the UEFA Europa League final in May, between Atlético and Marseilles in Lyon. After successful implementation of the new system in Lyon, all the tickets for the final of the Super Cup final in August were distributed through a Blockchain-based mobile application. UEFA will continue to develop the system in order to use it for future events, such as the Euro 2020 final, the Champions League, the Europa League, the Super Cup and the Nations Nations 2019 and 2021 finals.
